In view of the tense situation in Austria, especially in the federal states of Lower Austria, Upper Austria and Vienna, the ÖBB has temporarily closed the Westbahn line between Vienna Central Station and Linz Central Station.
The persistent rain and the associated flooding have prompted the ÖBB to cancel all train connections on the western route between Vienna and Linz. The southern route between Vienna and Mürzzuschlag in Styria is also closed. The ÖBB regularly monitors the situation and has extended the general travel warning until Thursday, September 19, 2024.
In order to ensure a minimum transport connection, the ÖBB is working in cooperation with Postbus to set up a bus connection on the routes Vienna Central Station - Mürzzuschlag and Vienna Central Station - Linz Central Station (without stops). The buses run from Vienna Central Station, Linz Central Station and Mürzzuschlag at 6:00 a.m., 9:00 a.m., 12:00 p.m., 3:00 p.m., 6:00 p.m. and 9:00 p.m. However, due to the unpredictable road conditions (for example due to road closures) and the limited availability of staff and buses (for example due to drivers and vehicles trapped due to flooding), operations cannot be guaranteed, the ÖBB explained in a press release on Sunday. It is currently unclear whether regular train services can resume from Friday.
