Zanzibar introduces compulsory insurance

Zanzibar is introducing mandatory travel insurance for all travelers from October 1, 2024. This is causing a lot of criticism.

Zanzibar, the popular Indian Ocean island known for its stunning beaches, will introduce a new rule for all travelers from October 1, 2024. From that point on, anyone wishing to visit the island will be required to take out special travel insurance. This compulsory insurance can only be purchased online from the state-run Zanzibar Insurance Corporation.

The government of Zanzibar has announced this measure as part of a broader plan to improve tourism infrastructure and strengthen the island's health system. According to initial information, the cost of this insurance will be around US$44 per person. However, this amount could vary depending on individual circumstances and the length of stay. The insurance can be applied for online via the official Visit Zanzibar website, which will be set up specifically for this purpose. After a successful application, travelers will receive a QR code that must be presented upon entry to Zanzibar.

Some tourism experts fear a decline in interest in travelling to Zanzibar. Another criticism is that the government does not allow "third-party insurance", meaning that tourists are forced to choose the country's official insurance company and have no free choice.
