Japan introduces ''JESTA'' entry system

Japan introduces mandatory entry permit called JESTA.

Japan is introducing a new entry system called "JESTA" for over 70 countries whose citizens were previously allowed to enter without an entry permit.

From 2030, the East Asian country of Japan will introduce a new entry system. Citizens of 70 countries, including Austria, Switzerland and Germany, will then have to obtain an electronic permit before travelling. The Japanese government justifies this step with the aim of enabling better control over entry and exit as well as over the travellers themselves. There are also plans to refuse entry to travellers who are on the so-called "blacklist" when boarding the aircraft. Officially, entry will remain visa-free, but in addition to the bureaucratic effort, the new entry permit will be subject to a fee.
